Planning customer connections - an interview with Surveyor Supervisor, Phil Moore.

  1. Name: Phil Moore.

Job Title: Surveyor Supervisor. Time with G.Network: 2.5 years.

What has your career path been before and during G.Network?

Before G.Network, I’d spent over 13 years with another well-known telecommunications firm. I’d joined them as an apprentice straight after getting my BTEC in telecoms and worked my way up.

I enjoyed working in telecoms, but after over a decade, I’d hit a bit of a ceiling and felt like it was time for a change.

I’d seen how quickly fibre was growing, so when G.Network started hiring, I knew it was time to specialise in fibre.

I joined G.Network as a Fibre Specialist in their Surveys team and worked my way up to Principal Fibre Specialist and then Supervisor. That’s where I’m at now, but with G.Network I know there’ll be lots of opportunities for me to progress further.

And what’s your current role like?

I’m in charge of 10 Fibre Specialist Surveyors, and a big part of my job is making sure they have everything they need to deliver the highest standards of workmanship.

I act as the first point of contact for my team. From tackling day-to-day issues to conducting 1-2-1 progress reviews, I ensure they’re equipped with the tools and resources they need to successfully survey buildings and plan the best connection routes for fibre installation.

In addition to this, I also carry out site audits to ensure the team are safe and doing their best work for our customers.

What does an average day look like for a Fibre Specialist working in Surveys?

When you first start with us, you’ll be given full training to bring you up to speed. From here, you’ll be taken under the wing of an experienced surveyor, working towards taking on 1-2 jobs of your own each day. That means attending 1-2 customer sites to survey the building and plan the best possible route for fibre connection.

You’ll pull this information into a job pack so our Installation team can hit the ground running as soon as they arrive. After each site visit, you’ll be given 2 days to get your plans written up and ready to go.

Once you’ve settled in, your job count will increase to 3 per day, but we’re always happy to keep things flexible wherever possible.

For example, if you prefer writing your job packs in the morning, or find yourself with a significant gap between site visits, you’re free to arrange your day as you see fit.

What does an average day look like for you?

Each day is different for me, but I spend most of my time working my way around sites and meeting with my team. I do this firstly to make sure their jobs are going smoothly, but also because I’m a firm believer in building strong relationships.

My days can get busy quickly, but I try to work my way around the team so I see each Fibre Specialist face-to-face at least once a week.

In-between team visits, you’ll find me on the phone with customers and internal management, reviewing job packs, and planning my team’s upcoming projects.

Why is a career in fibre a good choice?

The copper wire networks people use today will soon be a thing of the past, making way for the future of full-fibre networks.

As a result, there’s a growing demand for fibre specialists, so there’s no better time to start a career in fibre with an exciting, high-growth company like G.Network.

Who are you looking for to join your team?

You don’t need prior fibre experience to join G.Network, but the ability to solve problems and quickly adapt to new situations is essential.

No two jobs are the same, and effective problem-solving is the key to successful surveying. So when you arrive on-site, you must be able to think logically, develop solutions to any potential issues, and be confident in the decisions you make.

Why G.Network? What makes it a great place to work?

G.Network is one of the few organisations building its own telecoms infrastructure, creating a 21st Century fibre network that will future proof London’s broadband for decades to come.

As part of our team, you’ll have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to build brand-new, untouched network infrastructure.

G.Network has been consistently winning investment since I first joined, and it’s exciting to be part of a company that has so much confidence placed in it.

What can you expect from a career at G.Network?

G.Network began its life as a startup. It's grown quickly since then, but it hasn’t lost that family mentality.

From trainees to senior management, everyone’s friendly and willing to chip in and help if you ever need support. It’s a company that genuinely cares about its people, and it’s a rewarding culture to be a part of.

The career paths are well-defined, too. If you’re willing to jump in and work hard, you can progress your career at G.Network quickly.

What advice would you give to someone looking to start a career in your field?

Have a great attitude, always put the customer first, and be willing to help your colleagues if and when they need it.

Fibre is the future, and there’s plenty of opportunities for your career to grow.
